A Heavenly Celebration

What is it like for you to imagine heaven? Have you considered what God’s Kingdom will be like? Are you confident you have an invitation to join God in his Kingdom? Are you making preparations to join the heavenly feast?

Most of us do not regularly consider heaven. We certainly do not make preparations for the life to come when we are so consumed by this life and our present cares and concerns.

In Matthew’s gospel account, Jesus told a parable of the Kingdom of God, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son” (Matthew 22:8-10, ESV).

Jesus compared the Kingdom of God to a opulent wedding feast where everyone was invited.

The King prepared the wedding feast and invited the guests, but they dishonored the king by not showing up. “Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.’ And those servants went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests.” (Matthew 22:8-10, ESV).

Everyone is invited to the wedding feast, which God our King has prepared for us. When we do not make preparations and attend, we dishonor our King.

God expects us to be prepared for his coming kingdom and to take part in his heavenly celebration which he has prepared for all to take part in and to enjoy.

May we honor our king by making preparations for the kingdom to come and ready ourselves for that great heavenly celebration.

A Collect for the Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 23): “O God, our refuge and strength, true source of all godliness: Graciously hear the devout prayers of your Church, and grant that those things which we ask faithfully, we may obtain effectually; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
