Forgiven - Our Debt to Forgive
What have you been forgiven? What do you have to forgive? In what way is you being forgiven supposed to shape how you forgive?
We have all been forgiven an un-repayable debt. We have been forgiven abundantly and perfectly by God.
Because we have been forgiven such a great debt, we are to forgive others as we have been forgiven.
When Jesus taught his disciples to pray in the Lord's Prayer, he taught them to pray for forgiveness for themselves and for others, saying, "and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses" (Matthew 6:12-15, ESV).
God calls us to forgive as we have been forgiven. We are to forgive others debts against us as God canceled our debts.
As forgiven people of God, may we pay our debt to forgive others their debts against us.
A Collect for the Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost, or the Fifteenth Sunday after Trinity (Proper 19): “O God, because without you we are not able to please you, mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
