Have you ever turned away from God? Have you returned to God? Have you ever held something back from God? Have you given your best to God?
What does it look like for you to turn away from God? What does it look like for you to return to God?
What does it look like for you to hold something back from God? What does it look like for you to give your best to God?
There are times when we hold back. We hold back from others and we hold back from God. There are times when we give our best and there are times when we hold back our best from God.
God spoke to his people Israel through the prophet Malachi, saying, “From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from my statutes and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts. But you say, ‘How shall we return?’” (Malachi 3:7, ESV).
When we turn away from God, the invitation is always to return to God. When we return to God, He returns to us.
God desires for us to return to Him and to give Him our very best.
May we return to God and give God our very best as He returns to us in His mercy and grace.
A Collect for the Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost, or the Twentieth Sunday after Trinity (Proper 24): “Set us free, loving Father, from the bondage of our sins, and in your goodness and mercy give usthe liberty of that abundant life which you have made known to us in our savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
