Rich Toward God
What is your true net worth? What riches do you have? Are you content with what you have, or do you want more? Are you rich toward God, or do you keep all your riches for yourself?
God has blessed us with so much. We have everything we need and then some. Even though God has provided so much for us, we can have the tendency to want more and to not share what we have.
In the Parable of the Rich Fool, in Luke 12:13-21, Jesus warned of covetousness, saying, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” (Luke 12:15, ESV).
We are not what we own. Covetousness leads to us wanting what is not ours and leads to be owned by what we own. We can possess our possessions or we can be possessed by our possessions.
Jesus warned about this in the Parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’ But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.” (Luke 12:16-21, ESV).
We can be rich toward ourselves and be eaten up by covetousness, or we can recognize “our life does not consist in the abundance of our possessions” and we can be rich toward God.
May we be rich toward God as we live a life of abundance and generosity in our serving God with all that we have.
A Prayer for the Eighth Sunday after Pentecost, or the Seventh Sunday after Trinity (Proper 13): “Almighty and merciful God, it is only by your grace that your faithful people offer you true and laudable service: Grant that we may run without stumbling to obtain your heavenly promises; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
