The Mission Field
What does the mission field look like? Where is the mission field? Are you being called to the mission field? Where is the mission field God is calling you to? What does God’s mission look like in your life?
Every believer is called to mission. Our immediate surrounding is our mission field.
At his ascension, when the disciples were gathered together in Jerusalem, Jesus said to his disciples, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8, ESV).
Our mission field begins with where we are. Our immediate surroundings, our “Jerusalem”, comes before we reach out in mission to “all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” If we are not faithful and effective to the mission in our own neighborhoods, we will not be faithful or effective in mission in the rest of the world.
Mission is essential for every follower of Jesus and the need for mission is great.
As Jesus taught his disciples and journeyed through all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming God’s kingdom, and healing people, he saw the multitudes and their need and he had compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, harassed and helpless, like a large flock of sheep without a shepherd to care for them.
Jesus said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” (Matthew 9:35-38, ESV).
Like Jesus and his disciples, we are to go out, we are to see people and their need, we are to have compassion for them and we are to pray for the Lord of harvest to send laborers into the harvest field of our lives, even as we ourselves go.
The mission field right around us is ripe for the harvest, but the laborers who go out as required are few.
May we reach the mission field of our neighborhood, seeing with compassion those who are right next door, and may we labor in the harvest field, even as we pray for more laborers to be sent out into God’s harvest.
A Collect for the Second to Last Sunday of Epiphany: World Mission Sunday: “Almighty God, through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, you revealed the way of eternal life to every race and nation: Pour out this gift anew, that by the preaching of the Gospel your salvation may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
