A Greater Treasure

What is the greatest treasure you have ever seen or experienced? What kind of treasure would make you give up all you have to possess it? 

Jesus and his kingdom are the greatest treasure we can ever possess. 

When we have the kingdom of God, we have everything we need, everything we desire, and more than we can imagine or perceive. 

In Matthew’s gospel account, Jesus said, “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” (Matthew 13:44, ESV). 

When we discover God and his kingdom treasure, we become willing to give up all we have to possess God and his kingdom. 

The kingdom of God is an invaluable treasure worth more than we can imagine, and is worth everything we are willing to give to have it. 

May we seek the greater treasure of God and his kingdom as we give up all we have to possess it. 

A Collect for the Ninth Sunday after Pentecost, or the Eighth Sunday after Trinity (Proper 12): “Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour down upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
