God’s Provision

What do we need to live? What are our longings and desires? Are our desires the same as our needs? What provision do we need? How are we looking to God to provide for us?

Jesus is the creator and the sustainer of our lives. God has always provided for his people and God gives us our daily bread as well.

In Matthew’s gospel account Jesus fed 5,000 men with five small barley loaves and two tiny fish.

Matthew tells us that Jesus “ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.” (Matthew 14:19-21, ESV).

Not only did Jesus meet the need of the hungry crowd, there were leftovers. Everyone was satisfied and then there was more.

God sees our need. God has compassion on us and our need. God provides for his people.

May we trust in our compassionate God who sees us and who sees our needs and provides.

A Collect for the Tenth Sunday after Pentecost, or the Ninth Sunday after Trinity (Proper 13): “Almighty and merciful God, it is only by your grace that your faithful people offer you true and laudable service: Grant that we may run without stumbling to obtain your heavenly promises; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
