Doing the Work of God
What is the work God is calling you to do? Have you responded to God? Are you doing the work God is calling you to?
God calls each of his children to do his work in the world. Oftentimes we talk about what we will do and we do not follow through with obeying God and actually doing his work. However, God does not want us to simply talk about what we will do to obey him, God actually wants us to obey him and to do the work he is calling us to.
In Matthew’s gospel account, Jesus told a parable of two sons. One son told his father he would work in his vineyard, but he did not do it. The other son said he would not work in the father’s vineyard, but he did go and work in the vineyard as he was asked. In the end, it was the son who obeyed the father that served him well by doing the work.
Jesus said, “What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he changed his mind and went. And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father? They said, ‘The first.’ Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you.’” (Matthew 21:28-31, ESV).
Like the obedient son who worked in his father’s vineyard, may we do the work that God is calling us to do in the world.
A Collect for the Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost, or the Seventeenth Sunday after Trinity (Proper 21): “O merciful Lord, grant to your faithful people pardon and peace, that we may be cleansed from all our sins and serve you with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
