The Greatest Commandment

What are your governing principles, values, virtues, and mission? Do you have a rule of life, or a rule that you live by? What is the commandment that you live by?

As followers of Jesus, we are all called to live by God’s greatest commandments. We are to be motivated by our love of God and by God’s love for our neighbor.

In Matthew’s gospel account, Jesus was asked by a lawyer what the greatest commandment was, and Jesus responded to love God and to love your neighbor.

Matthew tells us, “When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. ‘Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?’ And Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.’” (Matthew 22: 34-40, ESV).

God calls us to live by the law of love, the love of God and the love of our neighbor. Our primary mover, our primary motivation and high call, is to love God with all that we are and to love our neighbor as ourselves.

May we live our lives for the love of God and for the love of others as we obey the greatest commandment of Jesus to “love the Lord your God with all our heart and with all our soul and with all our mind and love our neighbor as yourself, because on these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

A Prayer of Saint Francis: "Most High, glorious God, enlighten the darkness of my heart and give me true faith, certain hope, and perfect charity, sense and knowledge, Lord, that I may carry out Your holy and true command. Amen." (Saint Francis).

A Collect for the Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost, or the Twenty-first Sunday after Trinity (Proper 25): “Almighty and everlasting God, you govern all things both in heaven and on earth: Mercifully hear the supplications of your people, and in our time grant us your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, whole lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
